In honor of National Trails Day yesterday, the tots and I visited Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. The white sandstone contrasted beautifully with deep red rock in the landscape around the park, evoking a welcoming yet desolate feel.

National Trails Day
Guess what’s coming? It’s National Trails Day!
If you’ve never heard of it, don’t worry, I hadn’t until about a month ago. But apparently the American Hiking Society hosts a National Trails Day the first Saturday of every June. This year it’s Saturday, June 1st, 2013.
The idea behind National Trails Day is to get out and appreciate the trails near you. You can do that by going on a hike, or participating in the numerous volunteer efforts planned for the day. There are events scheduled in every state, but if you don’t see something you like, you could always host your own.
Last year was the twentieth anniversary of National Trails Day, and I hope it continues for many more years to come.
Will you be hiking that day? If so happy trails to you!
Haverford Nature Reserve, Pennsylvania
I recently enjoyed a springtime stroll down Meadow Trail in the Haverford Reserve, near Havertown, Pennsylvania. My brother lives there with his wife and their three beautiful girls. On this particular day we spent the morning playing at the coolest park I’ve ever been to (Nice one Haverford!), before crossing the street to enjoy the wilderness for a while.
Haverford Reserve is a huge swath of land right outside of Philadelphia. I was told by my sister-in-law that it used to be a private estate, but the owner gave it to the city to be used for recreational purposes. Some of the land was turned into a city park, some into sports fields, and some into well maintained hiking trails.
National Park Week: Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park is so vast I had to include another photo for this National Park Week celebration. This is the Lower Falls in the Canyon Village area of Yellowstone. The alpine environment of this canyon is juxtaposed against the hot springs in other areas of the park. I loved hiking the South Rim Trail and enjoying the view from Artist and Lookout Points.
The diversity of Yellowstone is a landscape photographers paradise. Mountain Dad loved finding that ‘perfect shot’ that captured the beauty of the space. I have to say I just loved being there…and seeing the finished photos afterward.
