Motherhood Moments: Don’t Pee in the Oatmeal

Sharing is caring:

There are times when things come out of my mouth that I never expected to say to another human. These are some favorites from the last week:

“Close the door when you’re peeing in public!”
“You have to have clothes on to play with friends.”
“Don’t put toys in your vagina!”
“That’s not chocolate, it’s your poo.”
“Don’t crawl under the bathroom stall, someone else is in there!”

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable when I say I that I NEVER thought those words would leave my mouth. Seriously. But my most aggravating bit of unexpected shared wisdom was yesterday when I said the following to BIG E:
“Why don’t you have any clothes on?”

“Did you dump ALL the oatmeal on the floor?”
“WHY DID YOU PEE IN THE OATMEAL? THERE’S A BATHROOM RIGHT THERE!”
I can expect a little logic from a five year old. He’s old enough to realize that dumping breakfast food all over the carpet while mom is hurriedly making dinner is not a good idea. We’ve cleaned up so many messes, he should be able to expect my reaction to oatmeal bits ground into his floor.
And yet, when he had happily bounced out of his room, naked, excitedly exclaiming “I peed in the oatmeal!” he didn’t seem to consider what would come next.
Things went downhill from there. Yelling, crying, vacuuming, sweeping, time outs, silent treatment, cold dinner. Big E and his accomplice little g were lucky that Mountain Dad came home from work right then. My furious mood could’ve seen them locked in their rooms for the rest of the night.
As a parent, I’m constantly surprised by my kids. I just wish they would surprise me in less messy and embarrassing ways.

Wacky Apple Organic Snacks GIVEAWAY!

Sharing is caring:
A few weeks ago Wacky Apple Organic Snacks contacted me about reviewing some products for this site. They had no way of knowing that Big E has food allergies to wheat, eggs and peanuts which makes snack foods particularly hard to find, so I’m always on the lookout for new foods he can actually eat.

We were all beyond pleased. Their apple sauces, juices and flat fruit are organic, naturally sweet, conveniently packaged and really tasty. My favorite flavor was Apple Apricot Applesauce, while Big E liked Apple Cinnamon. Their flat fruit was really good too – soft and tasty – it didn’t last a day.

If you’re interested in trying Wacky Apple you’re in luck! We have a giveaway for you! Leave a comment about your favorite kid snack (either when you were a kid or that you give kids) and a Wacky Apple tasty pack could be yours. Winners will be chosen on March 1, 2014.

Deep: The Story of Skiing and the Future of Snow

Sharing is caring:

You may have noticed a common theme on my posts for the last two months or so – snowboarding. While the warm weather months see me camping, hiking and traveling for various adventures, the winter keeps me close to home so I can enjoy the best sport in the world – snowboarding. I love the feeling of speeding down the mountain, floating through powder or trying new tricks in the park. On the list of things that bring me joy, snowboarding is at the top, second only to my family.

So last week, after taking a few runs at Sundance Resort I got in my car and heard a program on the future of skiing on RadioWest. It was depressing. On the show, Doug Fabrizio was interviewing reporter Porter Fox about his new book Deep: The Story of Skiing and the Future of Snow. According to Fox’s research, global warming and its effects could close up to half of the nations ski resorts in over the next thirty years. That’s my lifetime, my kids’ life.

I absolutely don’t want to see that happen. In general I’m an environmentally friendly person, (ignore the fact that I drive a big truck), but this news report makes me want to do more. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Snowboarding with Team Utah Sundance

Sharing is caring:
I had an awesome snowboarding experience a few days ago – riding along with Team Utah Sundance! Team Utah Snowboarding has chapters all over the state, but the Sundance chapter is extra special since it’s my home mountain.

Sundance Mountain Resort works in tandem with Team Utah to provide a developmental program for youth age 10 to 18. Although small, this group is committed to learning new skills and progressing in the sport. These riders are already hitting jumps, riding boxes and working on spins, even though two are first year team members.
While riding with Coach Jordan Rehrer and his group I learned a wealth of information – how to ollie and nollie, on hill 180s and 270s, practicing boxes and jumps. It was challenging and tiring but so worth it.

Coach Jordan Rehrer trains with riders every Saturday and select Wednesdays throughout the season. He started snowboarding at Sundance Resort fifteen years ago, moving to coaching at age nineteen. His philosophy involves emphasis on form and fundamentals while riding according to conditions, whether that’s park tricks, powder lines or tree skiing.

These riders are learning new skills while preparing for the Team Utah banked slalom race in March, hosted by Sundance Mountain Resort. My day with the team inspired me – just in time for the X games and Olympics.

Go Team Sundance!
